Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: To study the apoptotic effect of garlicin on esophageal cancer EC9706 cells. METHODS: We used 18 μg/mL garlicin to treat esophageal cancer EC9706 cells, and analyzed the effect by cell culture, cell count, flow cytometry analysis,Hoechst33258 staining,HE staining and electron microscopy. RESULTS:Proliferation of EC9706 cells could be inhibited by 18 μg/mL garlic, cell growth inhibition rate was 75.89%. Flow cytometry analysis showed that garlic could induce the emergence of apoptosis, and the rate was 23.8%,blocked at G2/M phase. Concentrated cell nucleus appeared granular and fluorescent by Hoechst33258 staining. Light microscope and electron microscope showed that the morphology of the cells treated with 18 μg/mL garlic appeared shrunken, cell nucleus concentrated, chromatin agglutination, mitochondria swelling, and other significant apoptosis characteristics. CONCLUSION:This study suggested that garlic could induce apoptosis of esophageal cancer EC9706 cells effectively.
